Fiscal Fitness is about providing better and more efficient government to the citizens of Rhode Island. In February, Governor Carcieri recognized the accomplishments of state employees, specifically the individuals who have contributed to the Fiscal Fitness Program. Additionally, the Governor and the Fiscal Fitness program announced the priorities for the upcoming year. So far, Fiscal Fitness projects have resulted in over $140 million dollars of savings through the end of this fiscal year.
The next phase of the Governor’s Fiscal Fitness Program will focus on several priorities to increase the amount of savings and provide better service for the Rhode Island taxpayer. Specifically, the State spends over a billion dollars on goods and services annually. Fiscal Fitness will continue to look at ways to reduce the amount of money spent on purchasing goods and services. Online competitive auctions (known as reverse auctions), cooperative agreements, and better use of master price agreements are all ways for the State to better leverage its purchasing power. Fiscal Fitness program also is managing a project to move professional license renewal online. Recently, license renewal for travel agents, travel agencies, travel mangers, real estate brokers, and real estate sales representatives all went live.
Another priority for Fiscal Fitness is working to help centralize four major areas of State government. The Governor issued Executive Orders to centralize Human Resources, Information & Technology, Legal Services, and Facilities Management. While each of these areas are responsible for implementing their own centralizations, the goal of Fiscal Fitness is to keep these centralizations on track, and focused on providing outstanding service to State agencies.
As a Rhode Islander, I am personally looking forward to making a difference by improving our State government as part of one of the Governor’s initiatives.
Sincerely,
Dan Majcher
